Hugs with Kate Hawkins

Kate and I met in 2017 when we became neighbours and quickly bonded over our shared love of Art. Kate is a London based Artist who also owns the wallpaper company CommonRoom where you will find these wallhangings in her online shop.

Originally, these wallhangings were to become Half a Hug cushions; to hold you tight in times of trouble. Beautiful. However, these two had an inking error during the screen printing process and could not be sold. Rather than throw them away, Kate asked if I would create something from them. Without hesitation, I said yes.

Keeping the idea of the hug and considering what everyone had been through over the pandemic, I felt that one of them should be cut up and stitched back together. Not exactly how it originally fit, but scarred. It felt appropriate with the constant loom of another lockdown over our heads and more hugs stollen from us. Thus Hug I was created.

Hug II

I considered this hug to be a misfit but still wanted to evoke its original significance. A damaged hug could be made beautiful again. I used various textures of a similar shade of green so as not to create an eye sore but to make you look closer and see the details.

Both wall hangings are available to purchase through CommonRoom.
